At 6 PM on November 7th, 2017, we will host the thirtieth debate of the VERITAS Debate Nights series at the Budapest Business School. The title of the debate is Hungarian Emigration in the Wake of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. János Rácz, Research Fellow at the VERITAS Institute, and Gusztáv D. Kecskés, Research Fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – Institute of History, will familiarize the audience with the topic, while Endre Marinovich, VERITAS Deputy Director, will lead the discussion.
The presenters will disclose how many refugees fled Hungary in the wake of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and where they went. They will also debate the social makeup of the refugees, while clarifying the definitions of the terms refugee, emigrant and dissident. Finally they will discuss the assistance provided to the refugees by the UN and share some personal stories of individual ’56-ers.
