In 2015 the Hungarian government announced the GULAG Memorial Year with the understanding that, even outside of Hungary, the word “gulag” was a synonym for inhumanity, communist terror and Bolshevik tyranny. The local government of Hercegkút, the Public Foundation for Hercegkút and the GULAG Memorial Committee will host the closing event of the GULAG Memorial Year in Hercegkút on February 23rd, 2017.
Mayor of Hercegkút József Rák will give opening remarks, while Minister of Human Capacities Zoltán Balog has been invited to give the keynote address. Andrásné Koczák and János Naár, both local survivors of the gulag, will talk about their experiences in the camps. Following the wreath laying ceremony at the memorial to the victims, Justice of the Constitutional Court of Hungary István Stumpf will make a speech. Gábor Ujváry will be representing VERITAS at the commemoration.
