On June 19th, 1991, the last Soviet troops withdrew from Hungarian territory, eleven days ahead of the agreed-to drawdown. On June 30th, József Antall traveled to Somló Hill, near the village of Somlóvásárhely, to give a speech celebrating Hungary’s restored sovereignty.
Since 2009, the Society of Friends of József Antall has held an annual commemoration at the St. Stephen Observation Point on Somló Hill. Preceding the ceremony, the members of the society lay a wreath at the statue of József Antall Sr. in the center of Oroszi.
Mayor of Doba Zoltán Horváth’s opening remarks are followed by Constitutional Court Justice László Salamon’s keynote address. The VERITAS Institute is represented by Deputy Director Endre Marinovich and Senior Research Fellow Eszter Zsófia Tóth at the event.
