Vitéz Vilmos Nagybaczoni Nagy was a commanding general of the Royal Hungarian Army who served as Minister of Defense between September 24th, 1942, and June 12th, 1943.
At the time of the announcement of his dismissal, he bid farewell to the personnel of the Ministry of Defense with these words: “(...) the one proper course of action always remains within the framework of the law, is fair, decent, humane and sincere, even if it does not always coincide with the ever-changing interests and perceptions of daily life. As a constant point of reference, I followed the Bible and obeyed its everlasting laws. As a soldier, I also considered the Rules of Military Service as law. These shaped my conduct, and I was never willing to deviate from them. Nor will I until either God or man creates law that is better, fairer and more humane. (...) I have proclaimed and proclaim even today that to be honorable means that we stay firmly on the path that our laws and rules have laid out. We do not stray from the path for anyone or any interest. Honor demands persistence, perseverance, frank and honest thinking and action!”
