VERITAS Research Institute for History and Archives

06 November 2019

The (Visegrád) V4 Architectural Foundation and the VERITAS Institute jointly host our colleague András Joó, whose lecture is entitled Three Political Profiles from the Horthy Era: Kánya, Bánffy and Kállay.

Inspired by Béla Hamvas’ well-known work in which he describes the Hungarian outlook on life and political worldviews of the “five geniuses”, Dr. Joó looks at the lives of three interesting personalities and how the events of the Interwar Era shaped their thinking and perspectives. The critical junctures that ultimately determined their destinies highlight for us the twists and tragedies of 20th century Hungarian history. By studying the lives of Kálmán Kánya, Miklós Bánffy and Miklós Kállay, these sons of western Hungary, Transylvania and the Great Hungarian Plain, respectively, we are able to look at our history from several different perspectives and thus better understand it.
