The new year’s first VERITAS event will take place on Tuesday, January 5th, at 6 PM at the Budapest Business School. The topic of the debate (which is open to the general public) is the life and political endeavors of Kálmán Széll; Professor András Gergely will moderate while historian and Director of the Hungarian History Institute in Vienna Iván Bertényi Jr. and VERITAS Research Institute for History Research Assistant Ádám Schwarczwölder discuss.
With the 100th anniversary of his death, Kálmán Széll is once again in historians’ crosshairs. His indisputable achievements included stabilizing the state budget by replacing earlier unfavorable loans with ones offering better conditions and bringing a stability to the country during his prime ministership. Despite taking austerity measures, he maintained his popularity, even gaining the backing of political opinion for his programs.
In October 2015 – bearing Széll’s creedal slogan: Legislation, Law and Truth – a book was published, courtesy of the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) Tihany and Kálmán Széll Foundations. The chief editor of this tome was none other than Iván Bertényi, while his debating partner Ádám Schwarczwölder also contributed three works.
