At 6 PM on March 1st, 2016, the VERITAS Research Institute for History will host its fifteenth Debate Night at the Budapest Business School. The topic and title of the debate is The Churches and the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Part in the 1960’s. Tibor Zinner, VERITAS Subject Team Leader, will moderate the discussion between Viktor Attila Soós, representing the Committee of National Remembrance, and Eszter Zsófia Tóth, representing VERITAS.
The participants will take a look at how the various religious denominations in Hungary were able to function in the vice grip of the communist dictatorship, highlighting measures taken by the state security apparatus against the churches. These included intelligence reporting by undercover agents. Finally Soós and Tóth will discuss the convents’ plight and the legal proceedings undertaken by the dictatorship against certain clergymen.
