Lake Balaton is like the Riviera for me / I love sunbathing in the sand... sang Anikó Felföldi and Lehel Németh during the 1960’s. Lake Balaton truly was the “Hungarian Sea” during the socialist era since a vacation at the seaside was seemingly impossible for many Hungarians. In good weather the freshwater lake provided the perfect vacation getaway for the masses. If the weather was bad, however, the visual of beautiful girls sunbathing on the lakeshore was replaced by angry holiday goers decked out in sweaters and sweatpants. Eszter Zsófia Tóth, Senior Research Fellow at the VERITAS Research Institute for History, will recall what it was like to stay at Lake Balaton in her presentation titled Attainable Dream – Summer at Lake Balaton.
